2006 Garden Benefit a Beautiful 'Affair'

It could easily have been called "a celebration of beauty."  The Pasadena Museum of History's third annual spring benefit, "An Affair in the Garden" on Sunday, June 4, attracted more than 300 supporters who braved tropical temperatures to party Pasadena-style in the exquisite gardens of Marsha and Vern Bohr's Linda Vista estate.  The glowing honoree, Heather Lenkin, AIA, ASLA (http://www.lenkindesign.com/), set the pace for a veritable fashion show of elegant ladies in summery frocks, nattily-dressed gentlemen, and hats, hats, and more hats.

"It has been my joy to have turned the attention of the nation back to our wonderful city, which is known throughout the world for its beautiful gardens," noted Lenkin, who received a plaque from Garden Design magazine editor Bill Marken as the first two-time winner (2004, 2006) of its prestigious "Golden Trowel" award.  After expressing heartfelt thanks to her family, friends, and colleagues for their support and encouragement, she confided, "My hope is that I can continue to create beautiful gardens, and inspire others until I am 100!"  Tom Carruth, renowned hybridizer for Week's Roses, inspired the romantics in the audience with his announcement that Lenkin's husband,Marken, Lenkin, Carruth Harvey Lenkin, had commissioned him to develop a new rose in Heather's honor, which will bear her name.

Special thanks to event co-chairs Jane Armel and Fran Shellgren, to their hard-working committee, to the generosity of our event sponsors and auction donors, and to the Museum's volunteers and staff for making this extraordinary event possible.
