Fall 2007 Events

Sunday, September 16: The Landsacpe Legacy of Ruth Patricia Shellhorn

garden    Ruth Shellhorn was one of the most well-known and respected landscape architects of the 20th century.  During Ms. Shellhorn's 57-year career, she designed the landscapes for many Southern California landmarks, including Bullock's department stores in Pasadena, Palm Springs, Wilshire, and Lakewood; Bullock's Fashion Square malls in Santa Ana, Del Amo, Sherman Oaks, and La Habra; the Entrance, Main Street, Plaza Hub, and pedestrian circulation of Disneyland; the original Landscape Master Plan for UC Riverside; as well as hundreds of other commercial, institutional, and residential projects.

Kelly Comras, ASLA, is a practicing landscape architect in Pacific Palisades and is currently writing a book about Ruth Shellhorn's major contributions to the field of landscape architecture.  Reception and tour at the Shellhorn designed garden of Patrick Conn.

Sunday, October 7: Five Greene Gardens

blacker    In Five Greene Gardens, landscape architect Isabelle Greene and co-author Pam Waterman tell the story of how Isabelle came to garden design from a background in art and botany.  Granddaughter of Henry Mather Greene, Isabelle was raised in Pasadena.  She knows the rhythm of Southern California's Mediterranean climate -- the long, dry summers and cool, wet winters; its chaparral-covered hillsides; its wonderfully varied flora; and all its arid beauty.

Pam Waterman will lead the lecture, and Isabelle Greene will guide participants on a tour of one of her latest gardens at the Blacker House. Reception to follow.
