Carl Oscar Borg emigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1901, settling in Los Angeles in 1903 where he became active in the emerging Los Angeles art community. Borg was quoted in a 1915 Los Angeles Times article, "After two years of Paris, give me Los Angeles!...because I believe that art is soon going to have one of the biggest of its 'booms,' a new renaissance, on the Pacific Coast."
Eva Fenyes purchased California Oaks through the LA Friday Morning Club. The sale of this painting helped Borg pay for supplies and incidentals for his upcoming trip to Central America.
