William Merritt Chase was one of the most sought after portraitists in New York in the late 19th century. Feeling homesick for her parents, Eva Fenyes commissioned Chase to paint their portraits. She writes: “It seems very hard to be separated from you and dear mamma so long at a time and then to see you only a little while…The more I am away from you, the greater is my desire to have your portraits painted by some good artist.” While the portrait of Mrs. Scott is not signed, it has always been attributed to Chase.
