William Merritt Chase had recently returned from training at the Royal Academy in Munich when Eva Fenyes commissioned him to paint portraits of her parents. Eva dismissed her father's concerns over the cost, explaining in a letter to him that “I know nothing I would value more than the paintings.”
Chase utilized the methods and techniques he learned while studying in Munich, seen in the dark coloring of the works. His later work, what he is most well-known for, embraced a more Impressionist style.
