This painting of a reclining female nude highlights a recurring theme utilized by Richard E. Miller in many of his works—a woman wearing a colorful necklace. Around the time of this painting, Miller began exploring a range of techniques. He would employ certain models, accessories, and dress in a variety of configurations. One author described his paintings during this period as being “among Miller’s most inventive works.” (A Bright Oasis: The Paintings of Richard E. Miller, 41).
Until recently, this painting had been referred to by different titles, but research in the archival papers of Eva Scott Fenyes at Pasadena Museum of History has uncovered the correct title.
