John W. Nicoll studied in Europe before arriving in Pasadena in the late 1800s. His early California landscape impressionist-style paintings date from 1899, making him one of the earliest California artists to convert to this style.
Eva Fenyes owned three of Nicoll’s landscape paintings. Eva also received instruction from Nicoll, as seen in their correspondence, on a technique to transform plain, wooden picture frames into detailed frames with decorative clay, “Venetian Red” paint, and gold bronze powder (FCP Papers, Box 60, Folder 4).
