Remarks

Granville Seymour Redmond was one of California’s leading landscape painters.  While his later works utilized the brightly colored impressionist scenes many of his contemporaries were painting, his earlier works had a more subdued quality.  In an interview in 1931, Redmond complained that he preferred to paint pictures of solitude and silence but could only sell poppy fields (in Millier, "Our Artists in Person").
