John Hubbard Rich was a portrait painter and member of the Los Angeles County Art Institute faculty for 28 years.  His obituary noted that “Rich was known for his many portraits of local celebrities and for his colorful painting of California types, scenes, fruits, and flowers.”

Between 1908 and 1910, John Hubbard Rich painted four portraits of Eva Fenyes, Dr. Adalbert Fenyes, Leonora Muse Curtin, and Leonora Curtin.  Eva Fenyes also studied under his tutelage.  In 1911, while teaching at the Groton School in Boston, he was commissioned by Eva to paint portraits of her ancestors.  He worked from photographs, as well as original paintings.
